TortoiseSVN using _svn even if installed without ASP.NET hack option

I played with the TortoiseSVN client.  For some of our ASP.NET projects it required to install a ASP.NET Hack while installing the client.

When we wanted to use the Eclipse plugin and no longer needed the _svn folder style created by the ASP hack I tried to uninstall the client and install again without the ASP.NET hack but to my surprise the client was creating _svn folders like earlier and no the required .svn folders.

While searching the devel user list I found that the TortoiseSVN client creates an environmental variable for the hack and we need to delete the environmental variable before installing the client without ASP.NET hack.

Tried IzPack Installer creator and liked the interface.

Building a LAMP Server

Building a LAMP Server is an absolutely rocking site tutorial. I used this tutorial and was Up and running my LAMP server in almost 40 minues.

There is lots of information to learn. Bruce Timberlake has made each and every point so clear that there was no error in the complete process when I followed his steps start till end.

It feels very good when you have properly installed and configured your server and when it works after all the configuration is done.

I tried his steps on Red Hat Enterprise Linux RHEL4

Writing in Devnagari Unicode on Web Forums - HindiWriter

I came across a good Hindi writer software.  This writer is developed by Devendra Parakh and is available at TDIL Site.  This is a simple software which gets installed in seconds.

You just have to press SHIFT+PAUSE buttons and you are in devnagari mode.  This mode allows you to type in devnagari unicode on any window where you can type characters.  This makes the devnagari writing experience smooth and easy.

I have used this software in Orkut, Yahoo, GMail, MSN Messenger and even in Notepad.  I had some problems writing Marathi with this software.  I wrote a mail to the author and got reply within 24 hours.  This is great.  You write a mail to the author and you get a reply directly by the author with fewmore tips and also a help file which is meant to be released in the new version of the software.  This help file helped me write Marathi full stop and also gave me tips about writing english characters in between Marathi unicode.

I recommend this software for easy writing.  I have also used Baraha but HindiWriter is easier and direct.

Compare files and directories with this file comparison software - Beyond Compare is a powerful, time-saving file compare utility.

I am using this software "Beyond Compare" and now addicted to the features. It is usable and comes handy in most of the situations where folder comparison is needed.

Most of the time I use this software for synchronizing folders with my own rules.

Firefox Memory Hack - reduces memory usage when minimized

Ryan has posted a super hack for reducing the memory used by Firefox when minimized. This hack works and it works exactly as said.

The original article is here named This May Help Your Firefox Memory Leak

Even though the author calls it a memory leak, many people in the comments section argue and call it not a memory leak.

Anyways it has solved my problem and may also solve yours:)

Log Diary, Notpad Easter Egg

Many a times we come across functionality not commonly known. These are surprises as less knows. I just got a mail from Marathi.NET yahoo group with this easter egg posted by Abhijit More. I think the source of this information is not known. I tried and it worked and is a great tool for those who use notepad to jot down points.

In Notepad

* Create a blank text file with .LOG as the first line of
the file, followed by the carriage return. [ Enter ](shown as below)
.LOG [Enter]

* Save and close the file ..
* Double-click the file to open it and notice that Notepad
appends the current date and time to the end of the file and places
the
cursor on the next line.
* Type your notes and then save and close the file.

Each time you open the file, Notepad repeats the process, appending
the time and date to the end of the file and placing the cursor below
it

It simply serves as a virtual diary!!

Microsoft site also documents this functionality for Logging through Notepad.

Yahoo Messenger installs a protocol on windows machine
"ymsgr:". We can issue many commands to the Yahoo Messenger

To keep a link on web page that will open a window to send IM we can keep the link as
<a href="ymsgr:sendIM?tusharvjoshi">Send Message through Yahoo Messenger</a>
which will look like Send Message through Yahoo Messenger.

Here tusharvjoshi is my yahoo ID and can be replaced by any valid Yahoo ID.

When user clicks on this link the following window will appear as if it has been started from the Yahoo Messegner window

MS Word - Set font size of Document Map

Suddenly all my document headings in the document map section of Word document started showing up in large fonts.

I got the way of changing the font of document map after some googling. There is a Document Map style defined in the styles in a document. We need to modify this style to set it as our desired font and the document map section automatically gets the font.

Firefox and Marathi Unicode Fonts

For many days I was troubled by the Marathi Unicode fonts display on Firefox. In process of finding the solution I came across the IEView extension for Firefox but very soon I shifted to the IETab Extension for Firefox.

IETab Extension solved my major problem not to start the IE browser just to see sites like http://www.manogat.com and http://www.maayboli.com as they are in Marathi Unicode font.

Today after searching more on the problem got a tip to check the Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Languages > Install fles for complex scripts option in Windows XP and Windows 2003 machines. The second East Asian Language is not needed to view Marathi Unicode.
This solved all my problem. Now I do not switch to IETab for Manogat and Maayboli sites. My Firefox just shows all the Marathi Unicode correctly.
