Usernames and Passwords everywhere

For each and every new site on internet you need a username and password. We need different passwords for each site due to security reasons. We dont want people to crack one password and get the key for each and every site where we have an account.

Lifehack has a great post saying 12 hours to better time management where the author has mentioned KeePass software. I thought it as interesting and installed it on my PC. Lets see if this makes the task of password maintenance really easy.

The KeePass site describes the software as:

KeePass is a free/open-source password manager or safe which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key-disk. So you only have to remember one single master password or insert the key-disk to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known (AES and Twofish).

Default fonts in Open Office Writer

I love the export to PDF feature of Open Office Writer. I write my documents frequently in OO Writer so that I can send the PDF export to clients easily.

I was wondering how to set the default font of OO Writer and it was a simple feature available in Tool menu Options dialog box.


I set my favorite font Georgia as the default for all the text I write.

Skype buddies in my Pidgin Rocks

In Skype I always faced one issue of not able to clear the chat window which I often do in my Pidgin chat windows through the keyboard shortcut CTRL+L. This is very handy tool for clearing the window in Pidgin.

Now as Skype users are available in my Pidgin list through the new Skype Plugin I get all the power of Pidgin chat window and my CTRL+L shortcut for Skype chats also.

I am Happy.

BlueJ way of learning Object Oriented programming

BlueJ is a tool to teach and learn Object Oriented programming. I fell in love with this tool as soon as I saw it, so indeed this is love at first site. I exclaimed hey! this is what I was searching for so many days.


The BlueJ site describes it like follows:

The BlueJ environment was developed as part of a university research project about teaching object-orientation to beginners. The system is being developed and maintained by a joint research group at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia, and the University of Kent in Canterbury, UK. The project is supported by Sun Microsystems.

The aim of BlueJ is to provide an easy-to-use teaching environment for the Java language that facilitates the teaching of Java to first year students. Special emphasis has been placed on visualisation and interaction techniques to create a highly interactive environment that encourages experimentation and exploration.

BlueJ is based on the Blue system. Blue is an integrated teaching environment and language, developed at the University of Sydney and Monash University, Australia. BlueJ provides a Blue-like environment for the Java language.

I have started using this tool in my Java course as it is available for teaching Java. I believe my students will love this tool and will be able to learn OO concepts fast.

Good bye Adobe Reader welcome Foxit Reader

Today suddenly Adobe Reader 8.0.2 stopped working for me like a naughty kid. I was desperate to read GeoTIFF specification version 1.0. I tried and tried but in vein. :(

Finally learning from some blog posts and geek words I agreed to download the Foxit reader and started using it.

This is fast and easy. I wonder how I lived with the buggy Adobe Reader so long and remain deprieved of this beautiful piece of happiness named Foxit reader.

Camtasia: Nice way to create training videos

So you want to create a video and publish it to your blog, ipod, or just about any format. Well Camtasia is the answer that you are looking for. This product has helped me create some nice videos showing a brief overview of the functionality of my website for new customers. The software allowed me to easily do a screen capture of my site, and then do a voice overlay later.

To create the video I found it helpful to first go through and cut points that you want to cover up into different topics. Then capture each one of those videos individually. Once you have done this you can add all of the videos together into the Producer section, where you can create a story board and add the voice over as needed.

Camtasia will allow you to execute your videos into the following formats:

• iPod video
• Flash (SWF and FLV)
• AVI
• Silverlight compatible WMV
• QuickTime (MOV)
• RealMedia (RM)

Audio Visual way is an interesting way to learn. Mark Dexter has created Video Tutorials for Basic and advanced topics in Java and made them available with Educational License terms to all. I respect people contributing to the world in proactive way.

Google Desktop for Linux makes
searching your computer as easy as searching the web with Google.

Not only can
you rediscover important documents that have been idling on your hard drive for

OpenOffice.org can be easily found. Since some Linux users are program

How to Delete an Undeletable File

Unlocker is a very
useful freeware that will allow you to unlock any files that are
currently in use by Windows. You’ll know if this is happening if you
are getting any of these messages when trying to delete a file:

• Cannot delete file: Access is denied
• There has been a sharing violation
• The source or destination file may be in use
• The file is in use by another program or user
• Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use

Unlocker will make things right again for you.

You’ll notice that right after installing the software, a new option
named “unlocker” will appear when right clicking any files or folders
in Windows Explorer. To unlock a locked file, just right click it,
select unlocker, and the unlocker software will start. Then, click
“unlock all” and close the software. Now that your file is unlocked,
just delete it in Windows Explorer, as you always do. This is much
simpler than solution #1 or #2, isn’t it?

I have found the Law of Demeter most useful in TDD practice.  This way we can create Mock classes in a better way.



The Law of Demeter (LoD), or Principle of Least Knowledge is a design guideline for developing software, particularly object-oriented programs. The guideline was invented at Northeastern University in the fall of 1987,
and can be succinctly summarized as “Only talk to your immediate
friends.” The fundamental notion is that a given object should assume
as little as possible about the structure or properties of anything
else (including its subcomponents).

TortoiseSVN using _svn even if installed without ASP.NET hack option

I played with the TortoiseSVN client.  For some of our ASP.NET projects it required to install a ASP.NET Hack while installing the client.

When we wanted to use the Eclipse plugin and no longer needed the _svn folder style created by the ASP hack I tried to uninstall the client and install again without the ASP.NET hack but to my surprise the client was creating _svn folders like earlier and no the required .svn folders.

While searching the devel user list I found that the TortoiseSVN client creates an environmental variable for the hack and we need to delete the environmental variable before installing the client without ASP.NET hack.
